AIT Utilizes Industry Connections and Flexes Network Muscle for International Project Cargo Delivery
Published on: Jul 26, 2012
The Challenge:A prominent supply chain management provider specializing in cross trade operations for the aviation industry approached AIT’s New York City station to execute the delivery of a 7,258 kilo CF6-80 aircraft engine from Atlanta to Guangzhou, China. With a truck waiting to pick up the engine on a Friday afternoon, notification arrived that due to a clerical error on the supplier’s end, the engine had been attached to an aircraft for another customer.
By the time a replacement engine was secured, it was late Saturday morning and AIT was asked to provide the hazmat declaration (or hazmat dec), a responsibility normally handled by the supplier. Due to flammable liquid in the engine, this critical paperwork is required by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and must be completed by certified hazmat personnel.
The Solution:On the Saturday afternoon of a summer weekend when on-duty technical experts were few and far between, AIT’s Atlanta station acted immediately to mobilize around the supplier’s urgent request. A qualified technician was secured to inspect the engine, label the cargo and perform the hazmat dec that ensured the project cargo was ready to ship the following morning. The AIT office in New York managed all other documentation while Atlanta co-workers were on hand early Sunday morning to orchestrate the pick up.
The Result:In spite of the supplier’s delay, the CF6-80 was delivered to Guangzhou safely and on time by coupling the vast reach of AIT’s global network with a rare combination of project cargo expertise, industry connections and unparalleled dedication to customer service. Rapid improvisation and intra-network cooperation by AIT’s co-workers on a holiday weekend helped the consignee resolve an “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG) situation, saving time and money by quickly getting their equipment back in service.
