Another Successful October in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
AIT-ORD's annual Making Cents of Cancer Knockout Event proved to be another great success, raising thousands of dollars for The American Cancer Society along with the traditional Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. AIT has been a sponsor of The American Cancer Society's fight for the breast cancer cure for 13 years.
Making Cents at AIT-ORD
AIT-ORD hosted its annual fundraiser on Friday, October 19. Complete with a hot dog cart, bake sale, silent auction and raffle with a bevy of prizes, over $7,900 was added to AIT’s overall donation. With 100% of the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society, AIT co-workers are proud of this success.
Making Strides in a New Location
The main event was the non-competitive Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k walk, held at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois on Sunday, October 21. As a flagship sponsor for the event, AIT kicked off with President and CEO Vaughn Moore offering his inspirational remarks to the thousands in attendance.
"I have some good news," he said. "Even in a down economy, there are companies that still care and AIT is one of them." Moore spoke about AIT's history supporting the American Cancer Society and Making Strides and he noted that the event is, "more than just a fundraiser for us." He also commented on being invested in a cause by getting personally involved - referring to such involvement as emotional currency - and he thanked everyone for their participation.
When the walk got underway at 9am sharp, participants enjoyed what amounted to a self-guided tour of Cantigny. In addition to the lush manicured gardens, the 5k route passed by active campsites, museums housed in structures dating back to the turn of the century and even a tank park.
Marketing and Communications Director Kim Smigiel, who also serves as AIT's Charity Committee Chair, reflected on this year's effort saying, "2012 was another year to celebrate the overwhelming amount of support from co-workers and AIT's business partners! Making Cents was extremely profitable with a little fun sprinkled into the work day – we had a collection of amazing prizes and a bake sale that filled my fridge with sweet and savory goodies. And Sunday morning was just perfect! Weather-wise, we couldn't have asked for a nicer day and giving back to our working community in DuPage seems to be preferred by AIT team members. A warm thank you to all pink ribbon supporters who helped to make each of the two major events a complete success for AIT."
